Handcrafting leather sandals is a traditional way of shoemaking that has been practiced for centuries all around the world. This particular kind of slow fashion used to be abundant in the Bay Area but has since become more difficult to find.  Come learn how to do this special craft yourself during a sandal making workshop at Black Rock Ranch, a beautiful farm on Mt. Tam that overlooks Stinson Beach. Stace will teach you, step by step, how to create your very own pair of custom leather sandals that are fit to your unique feet. No experience is necessary, Stace will provide all the tools & supplies.  See photos of past sandal making workshops & student-made sandals HERE and read student testimonials HERE

In this workshop you will learn to make your own custom pair of sandals made from sturdy leather soles, 0.5” stacked leather heels and supple leather straps and insoles.  Together we will explore the sandal-making process, from cutting the straps to fitting them to your own feet. Over the course of making your sandals, you will also learn the basics of leather crafting and you will become familiar with the essential tools and supplies of shoe making.

We will reference a handful of simple sandal designs as a jumping off point for making your pair of dream sandals. You can choose to keep it simple and make a design as-is, or modify & customize your design to your heart’s content! If you are set on creating a specific design, we can usually make it happen.

I’ll bring the basic leather colors: black, espresso, caramel, and natural vegetable tanned leather, as well as an assortment of colorful leather to use for your straps, embellishments and design elements on your sandals.

We will take a break mid-day for a potluck lunch, please bring something tasty to share with your fellow sandal makers! At the end of the day we will sand down the edges of your sandals, refining the fit and finish of your sandals.  You will be able to walk away from the workshop wearing your new custom, self-made sandals.

Where: Black Rock Ranch (address will be sent to you upon sign up)

When: Saturday, June 8, 2019 from 10am-4pm (some of you may finish a little earlier) we will take about 30 min for a shared potluck lunch

What to bring: working hands and outfits!  We will be cutting, kneeling, bending and standing during the sandal making process so wear something comfortable to work in.  It’s best to wear sandals as we will be getting barefoot during the fitting process. Bring a water bottle and snacks to keep you going.

Workshop Fee: $225, includes everything you need to create your very own pair of handmade sandals.  All tools, leather, patterns, supplies, and materials will be provided. Sign up HERE

If you are BIPOC or Trans and cannot afford this workshop, please email for a sliding scale ticket rate. Discounted ticket rates are limited.

Take Away: handmade sandals; made with a leather sole (your choice of round toe or square toe), leather heels and leather uppers.  You’ll also take home an outline of the sandal making process that includes ‘care and feeding’ of your new sandals and a list of local leather and shoe supply resources, should you wish to continue sandal making after the workshop.
