Handcrafting leather sandals is a traditional way of shoemaking that has been practiced for centuries all around the world. Come learn how to do this special craft yourself!  Join Stace at Ojai’s gorgeous craft emporium Cattywampus Crafts for a day of sandal making.  No experience is necessary, Stace will provide all the tools & supplies.  See more photos of past workshops & student-made sandals HERE and read student testimonials HERE

In this workshop you will learn to make your very own custom pair of sandals made from sturdy leather soles, 0.5” stacked leather heels and supple leather straps and insoles.  Together we will explore the sandal-making process, from selecting the leather & cutting the straps to fitting the sandals to your own feet. Over the course of making your sandals, you will also learn the basics of leather crafting and you will become familiar with the essential tools and supplies of shoemaking.

We will reference a handful of simple sandal designs as a jumping off point for making your pair of dream sandals. You can choose to keep it simple and make a design as-is, or modify & customize your design to your heart’s content! If you are set on creating a specific design, we can usually make it happen.

Stace will bring the basic leather colors: black, espresso, caramel, and natural vegetable tanned leather, as well as an assortment of colorful leather.

At the end of the day Stace will sand down the edges of your sandals on the belt sander, refining the fit and finishing the edges.  Your will be able to walk home wearing your newly made custom leather sandals!

Where: Cattywampus Crafts, 209 W Ojai Ave, Ojai, CA 93023

When: Saturday, June 22, 2019 from 11am - 4pm (some of you may finish a little earlier) there will be an option take about 20 minutes for a lunch break. An excellent cafe is adjacent to the store for coffee re-fueling!

What to bring: working hands and outfits!  We will be cutting, kneeling, bending and standing during the sandal making process so wear something comfortable.  It’s best to wear sandals as we will be getting in and out of shoes during the fitting process. Bring a water bottle and snacks to keep you going, and pack a lunch if you don’t want to leave during our lunch break. Also, one thing Stace hears in *every* workshop she teaches is “I should have gotten a pedicure!” fancy toes are definitely not necessary for this workshop, but students say they would have liked a reminder…so there it is!

Workshop Fee: $225, includes everything you need to create your very own pair of handmade sandals.  All tools, leather, patterns, supplies, and materials will be provided. Sign up HERE

If you are BIPOC or Trans and cannot afford this workshop, please email for a sliding scale ticket rate. Discounted ticket rates are limited.

Take Away: handmade sandals; made with a leather sole (your choice of round toe or square toe), leather heels and leather uppers.  You’ll also take home an outline of the sandal making process that includes ‘care and feeding’ of your new sandals and a list of local leather and shoe supply resources, if you wish to continue sandal making after the workshop.
