Handcrafting leather sandals is a traditional way of shoemaking that has been practiced for centuries all around the world. Come learn how to do this special craft yourself!  Join me for a sandal making workshop at  Maker’s Mess.  No experience is necessary, I will provide all the tools & supplies so you can make your very own pair of custom leather sandals that are fit to your own feet.  See photos of past sandal making workshops HERE and read student testimonials HERE

In this workshop you will learn to make your own custom pair of sandals made from sturdy leather soles, 0.5” stacked leather heels and supple leather straps and insoles.  Together we will explore the sandal-making process, from cutting the straps to fitting them to your own feet. Over the course of making your sandals, you will also learn the basics of leather crafting and you will become familiar with the essential tools and supplies of shoemaking. If you have ever wanted to learn how to make your own shoes, this sandal making workshop is a great introduction to the processes and tools you would use to construct shoes.

We will reference a handful of simple sandal designs as a jumping off point for making your pair of dream sandals. You can choose to keep it simple and make a design as-is, or modify & customize your design to your heart’s content! If you are set on creating a specific design, we can usually make it happen.

I’ll bring the basic leather colors: black, espresso, caramel, and natural vegetable tanned leather, as well as an assortment of colorful leather to use for your straps, embellishments and design elements on your sandals.

At the end of the day I will take your sandals to my studio to sand down the edges, refining the fit and finishing the edges.  Your sandals will be ready to pick up the following day at Maker’s Mess!

Where: Maker’s Mess, 602 North Hoover, Silver Lake, CA 90004

When: Sunday April 28, 2019 from 10am - 3pm (some of you may finish a little earlier) we will take about 20 min for lunch

What to bring: working hands and outfits!  We will be cutting, kneeling, bending and standing during the sandal making process so wear something comfortable.  It’s best to wear sandals as we will be getting barefoot during the fitting process. Bring a water bottle and snacks to keep you going.

Workshop Fee: $225, includes everything you need to create your very own pair of handmade sandals.  All tools, leather, patterns, supplies, and materials will be provided. Sign up HERE

If you are BIPOC or Trans and cannot afford this workshop, please email for a sliding scale ticket rate. Discounted ticket rates are limited.

Take Away: handmade sandals; made with a round-toe leather sole, leather heels and leather uppers.  You’ll also take home an outline of the sandal making process that includes ‘care and feeding’ of your new sandals and a list of local leather and shoe supply resources if you wish to continue sandal making after the workshop.
