Handcrafting leather sandals is a traditional way of shoemaking that has been practiced for centuries all around the world. This particular kind of slow fashion used to be abundant in the Bay Area but has since become more difficult to find.  Come learn how to do this special craft yourself during a day of sandal making at The Black Squirrel in Berkeley. Stace will teach you, step by step, how to create your very own pair of custom leather sandals that are fit to your unique feet. No experience is necessary, Stace will provide all the tools & supplies.  See photos of past workshops & student-made sandals HERE and read student testimonials HERE

In this workshop you will learn to make your own custom pair of sandals made from sturdy leather soles & heels and supple leather straps and insoles. Together we will explore the sandal-making process, from cutting the straps to fitting them to your own feet.

We will reference a handful of simple sandal designs as a jumping off point for making your pair of dream sandals. You can choose to keep it simple and make a design as-is, or modify & customize your design to your heart’s content! If you are set on creating a specific design, we can usually make it happen.

Stace will bring the basic leather colors: black, espresso, caramel, and natural vegetable tanned leather, as well as an assortment of colorful leather to use for your straps, embellishments and design elements on your sandals.

At the end of the day we will sand down the edges, refining the fit and finishing your sandals. You will be able to walk away from the workshop in your custom handmade sandals! I’ll also provide you with an outline of the sandal making process and a list of suppliers if you’d like to continue with sandal making.

Where: The Black Squirrel, 651 Addison St. Suite B, Berkeley, CA

When: Saturday May 18, 2019 from 10am-4:00pm (some of you may finish a little earlier or a little later). We will take about 30 minutes for a lunch break

What to bring: working hands and outfits! We will be cutting, kneeling, bending and standing during the sandal making process so wear something comfortable. Bring a water bottle and snacks to keep you going. We will work outside with the glue & the belt sander so bring sun protection if you like. It’s best if you wear sandals since we will be getting barefoot frequently. If you would like to try using the belt sander to finish your sandals, it’s a good idea to bring a dust mask (not necessary, I can finish your sandals if you prefer)

Fee: $250, includes everything you need to walk away with your very own pair of handmade sandals! All tools, leather, patterns, supplies, and materials will be provided. Sign up HERE
