Handcrafting leather sandals is a traditional way of shoemaking that has been practiced for centuries all around the world. Come learn how to do this special craft yourself! Join me at The Black Squirrel in Berkeley for a day of sandal making. No experience is necessary, and I will provide all the tools & supplies you’ll need. See photos of past workshops HERE

In this workshop you will learn to make your own custom pair of sandals made from sturdy leather soles & heels and supple leather straps and insoles. Together we will explore the sandal-making process, from cutting the straps to fitting them to your own feet.

You will choose from a handful of simple sandal designs that are easy for beginners to master, and I’ll bring four different leather colors: black, espresso, caramel, natural. I’ll also bring an assortment of smaller colorful bits of leather to use as embellishments or accents.

At the end of the day we will sand down the edges, refining the fit and finishing your sandals. You will be able to walk away from the workshop in your custom handmade sandals! I’ll also provide you with an outline of the sandal making process and a list of suppliers if you’d like to continue with sandal making.

Details:

Where: The Black Squirrel, 651 Addison St. Suite B, Berkeley, CA

When: Saturday March 9, 2019 from 10am-4:00pm (some of you may finish a little earlier or a little later). We will take about 30 minutes for a lunch break

What to bring: working hands and outfits! We will be cutting, kneeling, bending and standing during the sandal making process so wear something comfortable. Bring a water bottle and snacks to keep you going. We will work outside with the glue & the belt sander so bring sun protection if you like. It’s best if you wear sandals since we will be getting barefoot frequently. If you would like to try using the belt sander to finish your sandals, it’s a good idea to bring a dust mask (not necessary, I can finish your sandals if you prefer)

Fee: $250, includes everything you need to walk away with your very own pair of handmade sandals! All tools, leather, patterns, supplies, and materials will be provided.
